Under the leadership of Al Davis; the Oakland Raiders were one of the dominant NFL teams from the mid-60's; throughout the 70's and even into the early 80's. In 1976; the Raiders won a team record 13 games; defeated the Patriots and Steelers in the playoffs and reached the summit of professional football with their victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI.. Nobody loves reclamation projects more than Davis. Former Heisman Trophy winner; Jim Plunkett was cast out of New England and released by San Francisco before arriving in Oakland in 1978. In week 6 of the 1980 season; Head Coach; Tom Flores; gave Plunkett his chance. With an MVP performance; Plunkett rewarded his team's confidence in him by leading the Raiders to victory in Super Bowl XV. Led by Flores; the 1983 Raiders entered Super Bowl XVIII as underdogs to the highest scoring team in the NFL; the Washington Redskins. But the Raiders held that offense to just 9 points and manhandled the Redskins 38-9 to win their third Vince Lombardi Trophy. The story of the 1976 Raiders is told by Hall of Fame Head Coach; John Madden; Quarterback Ken Stabler and Linebacker Phil Villapiano. Plunkett; Linebacker Matt Millen and Hall of Fame Guard; Gene Upshaw recount the Raiders season of 1980. And the Raiders championship season of 1983 is retold by Hall of Fame Running Back; Marcus Allen; Tight End Todd Christenson and Defensive Tackle Howie Long; another Hall of Famer. | | | Features: | |

Raider rule # 1Oct 17, 2007

Cheating is encouraged. Raider rule # 2, see rule #1. The single most amazing fact about this collection is how all 3 Raider teams that became Super Bowl winners, clearly distinguish themselves from all other 37 teams. People might hate the Raiders, but it is hard to imagine a more colorful group. In this day and age, it would be hard to build an organization the way the Raiders built theirs. At some point in the narration they are described as an "evil empire" which is clearly contradicted by observing the characters in the film. These guys were not evil, they were just having a lot of fun and loving every second of it. This film should remind everyone that football is just a game and the beauty of the Raiders is not that they were violent, but that they approached the game the way kids do in the school yard. They weren't taking themselves too seriously at the same time the had tremendous respect for the game of foot ball. They were fierce competitors and they were a unit despite their different personalities. In the Raider world it was OK for a pseudo intellectual tight end to get along with a street smart, bully defensive end. They were supposed to be very rought outfit but they all loved their young, good looking, Ferrari driving tail back. Here we have Howie Long get emotional about Lyle Alzado who was 10 years older than him and lost, tortured soul. We get Gene Upshaw lovingly talking about teammates with enormous respect not only for what they did on the field but also for who they were. As Todd Chistenssen points out, some anecdotes sound terribly adolescent but that is what this is team was all about.
If you are Raider fan you will be reminded of great moments and great heroes. I have enormous respect for the narrators but I am glad that Lester Hayes got special mention here. Lester makes your feel proud to be a football fan, let alone a Raider. There are many great moments here that I am sure that will have any true Raider fan coming back to these films for a long time. My only two complaints are the extra material, I was expecting more and that there is not enough of Tom Flores. They mention him but Tom is a two time Super Bowl winner which puts him in a short list of coaches. The man should be regarded as one of the all time best period.

The America's Game series is yet another landmark from NFL Films. Beautifully written, recorded and produced, this is one of those shows that will have grown men ready to take the field in the quest of victory... and will also leave those same men crying as they recount their favourite moments of Silver & Black legends.
All three episodes, covering Super Bowl's XI, XV and XVIII, are emotional roller coasters and also provide amazing insight. Raider legends such as Kenny 'Snake' Stabler, Phil Villapiano, Jim Plunkett, Matt Millen, Howie Long, Marcus Allen and John Madden pull back the curtain on the Silver & Black Mystique and allow you, the fan, to enter their world.
There are funny stories... Matt Millen's account of his rookie season is priceless... there are moments of madness... Phil Villapiano displays why he is the perfect symbol for all things Raider... and there are moments of sheer heart-touching drama as Todd Christensen and Jim Plunkett share their thoughts, and emotions, of their glorious rise to the top of the football world after being given up for dead.
This series is one of those documents that no Raider fan should be without. All the slogans you know by heart... The Will To Win... Pride & Poise... Commitment To Excellence... Just Win Baby... if you're too young to have been there, this series will show you what those sayings mean... and how they became an essential part of the Raider vocabulary.

Again, The Sabol Family and NFL Films proves why no one else should be documenting the National Football League. Part of the Emmy Award winning series AMERICA'S GAME, these 3 segments are outstanding, whether you're a Raiders fan or not. Most moving is the tribute by Todd Christensen ("The only sin is the sin of ingratitude,")in the 1983 segment. The Raiders Theme by Sam Spence is dynamic and played throughout, as it should be. The only thing that could have made this series better is (the late) John Facenda (The Voice Of God) narrating.

This video is a "must have" for any Oakland Raiders fan (which I proudly am). It gives both personal and professional insights into the players and events of key rivals and games in Raiders history. Former Raiders linebacker Phil Villapiano is featured in this video along with many other Raider greats including John Madden.
